Tester certif scheme

Foundation Level

The Foundation Level qualification is aimed at professionals who need to demonstrate practical knowledge of the fundamental concepts of software testing. This includes people in roles such as test designers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and IT Professionals.

The Foundation Level exam is characterized by:

  • 40 multiple-choice questions
  • a scoring of 1 point for each correct answer
  • a pass mark of 65% (26 or more points)
  • a duration of 60 minutes (or 75 minutes for candidates taking exams that are not in their native or local language).

Advanced Level

The Advanced Level qualification is aimed at people who have achieved an advanced point in their careers in software testing. This includes people in roles such as testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and software developers.

Each Advanced Level exam module (i.e. Test Manager, Test Analyst and Technical Test Analyst) consists of 65 multiple-choice questions, is closed book, and the candidate must reach 65% to pass (the points given to each question reflect the difficulty of that same question). The time allowed for the exam is 3 hours and an extra 45 minutes may be allowed for candidates taking exams that are not in their native language.

Expert Level

The Expert Level extends the knowledge and experience obtained at the Advanced Level by providing in-depth, practically-oriented certifications in a range of different testing subjects. With Expert Level ISTQB® offers career paths for testers with clearly defined business outcomes.
An expert must not only be able to show knowledge, but also in depth practical skills; as a consequence an exam only using multiple choice questions is not preferred. The exam therefore consists of two parts:

Part 1: Multiple-Choice

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • 20 questions

Part 2: Essay

  • Duration: Reading: ½ hour, Answering: 2 hours, extra ¾ hour for non-native speakers
  • Answer 4 questions out of 5
  • Mostly higher level learning objectives
